Chapter 127

This time she didn’t sputter all over the place, her cup cluttered from her lifeless fingers  onto the table. A waiter rushed to her aid, smiling at her apologies of clumsiness.
Carol watched all in good humor. Maybe she said it a bit harshly. She hated talking in circles, so that’s the only way she knew how.
A hot blush covered her cheekbones as she stared at Carol in disbelief.
“Did I hear you correctly. You just asked me to sleep with your son and actually try and get pregnant!?”
“Close your mouth dear. We are both adults. The reason why I chose you is, I know you still have feelings for him. I like you very much and I would rather see you as my daughter in law as some ….other woman.”
“What do you have against her. Have you ever thought that he might love her?”
“No, he doesn’t. I think she blackmailed him so she could have a life of leisure. I’ve seen it all before.”
Still in shock, Dorothea tried to get her mind thinking straight again.
“If she was a golddigger, why did she wait all these years to tell him? How did he take it?”
“Hell, I don’t know!! Maybe she ran out of money…I don’t know all I know is I want her out of my son’s life. As for Jon he seems to like being a father. Jaden is a handsome boy and well mannered at that.”
“Jaden…” she could see in her mind’s eye, a blue eyed little boy with Jon’s heartstopping smile. Pain tore at her heart. It could have been their child..
“What about Jaden? She is the mother of his child.”
“She is penniless if you ask me. We’ll fight her in court if we have to. The boy stays, she has to go. End of story.”
Toying with her fingers, she stared at the tablecloth, her mind was in a rush, her heart told her yes, her mind screaming no. Her heart won.
“Ok, Carol. I’ll do it.”
A warm smile played on her face.
“Good. This is going to be so easy.”

It took Megan a few days to recover fully from her ordeal. Jon was by her side, diligently watching over her, making sure she had all she needed.

Feeling human for the first time in days, she made her way to her mother’s cottage. Jaden spent all his time there after school and as far as she could ascertain, her father grew fond of his grandson and Jaden of his grandfather. Jon and Richie were busy in the studio, as usual.
One light knock and she pushed the door open, calling her mother.
“Pumpkin! You look so much better!”
“Hey mom.” She leaned in for a motherly kiss.
“You had us all worried!  Jon watched over you like a hawk, the only thing I was good for was cooking meals.” She smiled lovingly, not that she minded at all.
“He was wonderful, wasn’t he?”
“A man in love will do anything for his woman. Don’t you know?’
Her heart skipped a beat, she felt giddy for a moment until her mind jerked her back to reaility.
“He doesn’t love me mom.”
“Oh nonsense! Why would he ask you to stay with him them?”
Sighing she patted the empty space next to her.
“This might sound horrible to you and its quite embarrassing to admit but what we have is a physical attraction. There is no love. Jon gave me an ultimatum. I move in with him or he will fight me in court for custody.”
Mary’s gasp whipped in the air.
“Jon? Would do that? I cant believe it!”
“You better believe it mom. I have the documents as proof.”
“You mean…he served you with papers?!”
She nodded.
“At least he accepts responsibility for Jaden, honey. Not many men do that nowadays and I cant believe he didn’t say anything about …ahem….you know your father.”
“He didn’t say anything cause he doesn’t know about it…and mom….I want to keep it that way, please!”
“Why sweetheart. Why  do you want to carry the burden with you? Jon will understand, he might be upset…but he’ll understand.”
A shiver ran down her spine as Jon’s words rang in her head….. just know IF I find out the truth. There will be hell to pay and everyone involved will pay for it long and hard.
“No! Mom, trust me its better this way. Let sleeping dogs lie.”
“When you said it was a physical attraction you talked about Jon, didn’t you pumpkin. You love this man.” It wasn’t a question but a statement.
She froze for a few moments, studying her mother’s face. How perceptive she was!
Her voice was but a soft croak.
“Yes…I love him.”
Motherly arms pulled her closer, holding her safe.
“Oooh sweetheart.  Men are different from woman, the physical side is very important to them. He will come around, I’m sure. Its just a pity I wont be here to witness it, but he’ll change.”
Moving away, she stared at her mother.
“What do you mean you wont be here?!” Are you sick? Oh mom!”
“No silly. I’m talking about the offer Jon made us. We decided to take the offer.”
Alarm bells rang.
“What offer?”
“Didn’t Jon tell you? We are retiring. We are going house shopping in this week.”
“Ok, obviously, I’m not in the picture here.”
“Well, Jon is worried about dad’s health. He offered to retire us, buying us a little place of our own.  There is even a trust in our names.  Don’t looks so upset honey, Jon means well.”
“The hell he does! He didn’t even discuss it with me.”
A worried frown crossed Mary’s face.
“Why don’t we make some coffee.  Don’t get upset over nothing. I don’t want you to get another migraine attack!”
She was suddenly in a hurry, but could just as well drink some coffee and tackle Jon later. How dare he keep this from her? She will give him a piece of her mind, damn you!
