Chapter 144

He smiled as his eyes flew over the words. He liked the song. It somehow helped with the pain gnawing at his gut, threatening to eat hole right through him.
His eyes rested on Megan’s still figure. Thinking that she might be asleep, he was quite surprised to see her fully alert, her dark eyes locked on him.
Dorothea never had the patience to sit with him when a song smacked him in the face, she always went off shopping or keeping herself busy.  Feeling sorry for herself that he wasn’t giving her any attention.
“You look quite happy with yourself? Song turned out well?”
“More than well, baby. I hit the jackpot with this one!” The pleasure on his face was immeasurable.
“So you think Richie will like it?”
“Maybe but we’ve been discussing  solo albums. I think this might be one for my solo album.”
“Really? That’s wonderful!  Personally I think the Blaze of glory album was a masterpiece! Richie’s Stranger in this town was quite a shock to me!”
Loving her interest in his music, he sat back to hear her opninion.
“How so?”
“Well I knew he could sing, but hell Jon you should let him sing with the band more often! He has wonderful voice!”
His laugh was a low rumble in his throat.
“Don’t let Rich hear that. I’ll never be able to live that one through!  Rich is a very talented man, he could go solo completely and would make a kick ass job of it too. BUT don’t tell him I said that!’ he winked playfully.
“I might just accidently let it slip.” Her eyes twinkled challengingly.
“Someone might get a spanking.”
The door opened unexpectedly.
“Are you still writing?” Dot voice filtered the air.
Jon saw Megan recoiled. The moment was broken.
Dorothea saw the direction of Jon’s gaze and she followed.
Megan was sitting quite comfortably on the counter, an empty cup in her lap.
“Oh hi.” She greeted, dismissing Megan as she turned her gaze towards Jon.
His eyes were fixed on the woman sitting on the counter. Jon’s heart jerked as he was the change in Megan. Her body stiffened, her face grew pale and she lost all warmth in her eyes.
“I think I’ll go now.”
She slid from the counter, leaving the cup right there.
“You wanted to discuss something with me remember?”
“It can wait.”
Closing a hand around her arm, he stopped her in her tracks. What she had to say was more important than Dorothea’s incessant, brainless chatter.
“No it can’t. Tell me now.” His voice was insistent yet gentle.
Brushing a quick glance towards Dorothea she looked at Jon, pulling her arm from his grip.
“Jaden’s birthday is a week away. I wanted to ask you if we could have a party here with some of his schoolfriends and the family.”
“Of cause you can! Why do you even ask? Here..”
He walked towards the table, opening his wallet, he walked towards her, holding a card in his fingers.
She stepped back.

“Its not necessary..I”
She shook her head vehemently.
“Meg. Remember its our son. I don’t mean anything by it, I just want Jaden to have a good birthday. Please take it honey…please?”
His gentle voice wooed her like a scared doe.
She looked up at his gentle, pleading eyes.
Reaching out she took the card, his touch fizzled her skin and she did all she could not too jerk away. She could feel Dorothea’s heated stare on her.
“Thank you.”
He nodded and the dazzling smile he sent her way almost blinded the two women standing there.
“Good to see you Dorothea.”
“You too.” Her friendly words didn’t reach her eyes.
Jon’s gaze followed her as she walked out, staring at the door even after she was gone.
“Jon?”
“Uuum..oh yes. Dot.”
She could feel anger heated her face. Their little display of family bliss didn’t sit well with her plans and even Jon’s insistence that she should use his card was outrageous! The little tramp! She was after his money after all, her little Oh- no- I- couldn’t- take- it acting was a farce.  Carol was right.
“You sure you could trust her with that card?”
Irritation nestled into his eyes.
“You don’t know Megan. Don’t assume anything if you don’t know her. In any case she wouldn’t be able to spend all the money on that card even if she tried.” His shoulders jerked as he turned around.
Attacking Megan wasn’t a good idea and she decided to change her course.
Coming closer, she rubbed between his shoulder blades.
“I’m sorry. I didn’t mean it that way. I am just concerned that you might regret given her your card.”
“Drop it Dorothea.” That was his final warning to her.
She knew that tone.
“So am I invited to Jaden’s party? I would love to see your parents again.”
“Sure. I’ll let Megan call you and confirm what time it will be.”
She laughed softly. Jon was not in the mood for any company and he didn’t even try and hide the fact!
“Don’t sound so businesslike, mr. I’ll be seeing you, so you could tell me the time. Do you know what I should buy him?”
“Now THAT you should ask his mother. I know he loves horses and bikes, anymore than that I’m still learning.”
“Ok then. I came here to ask you to take me out….” She pouted at him.
“I’m really busy today.” He saw her face and felt bad for treating her so shabbily.
“If you want to we can go out tonight. Let me finish up here first.”
“That sounds like fun but if you want to make it tonight. Let me cook you dinner and we can watch a movie.”
He wasn’t ready to be alone with her so soon, just have to make sure he doesn’t drink tonight. Just keep his head clear and everything will be ok.
“I never knew you were the domestic type Dot. CAN you cook?”
She gasped but the blush on her face told him all he needed to know.
“Maybe we should order in but I would have cooked for you!”
“Darlin’ I wanna grow old, order in woman. I wont hold it against you!” he was laughing at her flabbergasted expression.
She burst out laughing, there was no time for hurt feelings when luminous blue eyes teased your sanity like that.
