Chapter 145

“Hello,Carol?”
Jon came to a stand still hearing his mom’s name on Megan’s lips.
“Can I help you?”
Mega sighed. Would she ever win this woman’s trust?
“I’m sorry to bother you. I just wanted to invite you and John to Jaden’s birthday party on Saturday.”
“We will be there. What should we get him for his birthday?”
“As you know he loves horses. Jon bought him a new pony. So thought maybe a new hat or new riding boots. I’m going to buy him a new saddle.”
“We’ll get him a hat and a pair of boots then. What time did you say?”
The conversation was civil but short.
Knowing how badly Megan always jumped when he suddenly speak behind her, he cleared his throat before he spoke.
“So my mom and dad coming?”
“Yes,they are. Could you please tell Dorothea what time the party will be. I told Richie and Jason already.”
“Sure no problem.” He took a good look at her. Was she getting enough sleep? She looked tired, the dark rings under her eyes causing him to worry.
He walked over to where she sat, resting his hands on her shoulders. She was stiff as a corpse.
“Why so tense? Do you get enough sleep?” If he just knew that his touching her caused her to stiffen.
“I’m ok. Don’t sleep that well, but it will get better.”
“Whats wrong, baby.” The concern in his voice was genuine.
“I have a spastic colon and sometimes when I get stressed it packs up.”
“Do you have any medicine for it?”
“No, but I’ll get some at the pharmacy. I need to go to town anyway to get Jaden’s present.”
“I’m coming with you. I have nothing else to do anyway.”
She looked a bit unsure at him from under her lashes.
“If you’re sure.”
“C’mon grab your coat and lets go.”
They spent the whole day shopping, Megan watched in horror as Jon loaded all the presets into the car.
“This is not right! No child should be so spoiled!”
“And why not? “ he grinned at her big round eyes.
“You’ll turn him into a brat!”
He closed the boot of the car, stroking her jaw she sucked in her breath as she read the message in his luminious blue eyes.
“He’ll be our brat then.”
Dorothea flashed before her and she stepped back. He tried to hide the hurt crawling into his eyes by turning away.
“Lets have some lunch. I’m starving.”
“Why don’t you go ahead. I’m just going to get my meds at the pharmacy.”
He crossed the street and Megan turned away. Standing at the counter she scratched through her handbag, looking for her prescription.
Handing it over to the wide rimmed spectacled man, he flicked a quick glance over it.
“You’re not pregnant?”
“No!....uuuhh..”
His fingers stilled above the keys of the computer, looking at the woman’s distressed face.
Megan’s mind started running wildly. When did she last have a period? Icy fingers tapped down her spine.
As she looked up, the man held a pregnancy test towards her, a gentle smile in his eyes.
“Just to make sure. You don’t want to harm your baby, by taking this. If you are pregnant , I suggest to go see your doctor so he can prescribe something safe.”
Megan was in shock. Could she be? Oh God please not this! She paid for the test and threw it in her handbag.
She found Jon in the corner of the restaurant, staring at her as she came closer, his hand stirring the coffee absentmindedly. Her tummy fluttered at his smile.
Pushing the thought aside she smiled shakily at him, thankful for the chair at that moment. Her legs refused to carry her any longer.
“Did you get it?”
“Ooh..yes thanks. I did.”
