Chapter 110

Megan’s insides were shaking, Jon was literally dragging her towards the car and she had a hard time keeping up. She didn’t dare utter a word to him.
He was just about to help her in the car when John called to them.  Jon turned towards his father’s voice, his face grim.
Helping Megan into the car he turned to his father’s hurried figure.
“Son wait! Please!”
He reached the car and lowered himself to look a Megan.
“I apologise for Carol’s terrible outburst. Please give her time to work through this. It’s quite a big shock to us both.” He patted Megan’s hand.
Jon snorted.
“Yeah but I didn’t hear you screaming now did I?”
“Everyone reacts different. You know how much your mom loves you son, she just wanted to protect you. We will be there on Sunday. Please don’t be too harsh on her Jon.”
John’s friendly but somewhat strained face smiled into Megan’s.
“She is a wonderful person, you’ll see that. I know you will.” He winked at her, reached forward to plant a light kiss on her cold cheek.
He stood up, stared into his son’s expressive blue eyes.
“So I’m a grandfather huh?”
Jon smiled.
“Yep, all the way!”
Tears welled up in both men’s eyes.
“Welcome to fatherhood son. It will rip your guts out, make you feel like you are going crazy sometimes even make you think of murder. That’s all normal but…” the smile grew serious.
“but?”
“There is nothing like the feeling of unconditional love from a child and the overwhelming protectiveness you’ll feel towards him. You’ve been bitten son. You’ll never be the same ever again. Now you’ll know what you put me through and I hope to hell he is a naughty little bugger just as you were! Justice!!”
They embraced and Megan rubbed away the tears.
“See you two Sunday then?”
“Sunday it is dad, Bye oldtimer!”
“You made me one, remember?”
The loved they shared spoke louder than words.
John watched as the car drove away.
“Jon..a father. My! Thought I’d never see the day.”
His heart swells proudly.
“Grandpa…hmmmm..doesn’t sound too bad either.”
He turned to go inside, a cheery tune spilling from his lips as his whistling filled the evening air.
