Jon looked murderous and Matt was ready to excuse himself. But Megan didn’t give him a chance. She had a deathgrip on his hand and almost dragged him towards the dance floor, leaving Jon to stare at their backs.
She walked into his arms, the high color on her cheeks worrying Matt.
“You two were fighting, and I just had to walk in huh?”
“I’m glad you did. I needed some much needed air.”
She could feel his eyes boring into her back. He was like a constant shadow. Always there, waiting, staring.
Matt’s movement was perfect in harmony with hers and she smiled up to him, trying to change the subject. She wasn’t sure if he knew about Jaden and she sure wasn’t in the mood to find out.
“You sure are a good dancer, Matt.”
“Thanks to my mom. She introduced us to music when we were still in diapers, we learned to dance before we could even walk properly.” He winked at her.
The song ended and she excused herself. On her way to the bathroom she saw that their private room was empty and took her chance. Grabbing her coat and handbag she made her way to the exit.
The doorman hailed a cab in no time. Her heart was in her throat, the fear of Jon catching up with her almost choked her.
Silence greeted her as she opened the front door. She tiptoed to her room, undressed and made her way to the kitchen to make herself a much needed caffeine fix.
She expected his banging on her door or at least an irate phone call but it never came. In the early morning hours she finally fell into a nightmarish sleep.
The fact that Jon didn’t call her nagged at her subconscious. He wasn’t the kind of man to accept things as easy as that!
She dressed quickly and decided against having breakfast. She would take Jaden out for a milkshake after they’ve seen Blaze.
Jaden was dressed and packed when she walked in.
“Can we go now?”
“Yeah hun. All the papers have been signed, you are a free boy!”
“Guess who visited me last night?”
“No who?”
“Well Richie visited me first and then Jon. They said they were flying back to do the last shows but said that I will see them soon!”
“That’s so nice of them, honey. But you must just remember they are very busy and they might not be able to see you as they’ve promised!”
“Yeah, I guess.” The smile on his face wavered.
He was bouncing in the seat when he realized the road they have taken.
“Peanut, I want you to go see Blaze. Mommy don’t want you to be upset, but Blaze broke his leg. They are going to operate tomorrow, so I just wanted you to visit him and wish him luck for tomorrow, k?”
Tears streamed down his face.
“He is going to be ok? Wont he mom?”
“You know Jason will do anything he can to make sure Blaze will be ok. He even brought in another vet that specializes in that kind of thing to do the operation.”
The walk to the stables was slow, but with every step Jaden’s face lit up even more. He was clutching the sugar lumps Megan brought in his good hand.
She gave him all the time he wanted and took a stroll down towards the other stables. Jason found her deep in thought, stroking a mare’s velvety nose.
“A penny for your thoughts..” He whispered in her ear.
Megan clutched her breast as she stepped back in fright. The horse snorted and jerked her head .
“Oh God Jason! I didn’t hear you!”
“Sorry Meg, but you were quite deep in thought there!”
“You’re worried about Blaze huh?”
She wished that was her only concern, but sadly it wasn’t.
“Yeah…” she couldn’t meet his eyes.
“Have faith in me, sweetheart. Its going to be ok.”
She started walking back towards Jaden.
“Meg, I know this has nothing to do with me but I thought it was a bit strange for Jon to arrange for Blaze to go to New Jersey to his place. “
“Don’t get too excited about that. That’s not going to happen. I’m sorry but I cant say anything more than that. When the time is right I’ll explain, ok?”
He sighed. He fell hard for this woman and even come to think of it, saw Jaden as his own son. She never gave him any reason to believe there could be something serious between them but he couldn’t help falling in love with this sensitive creature. She was funny, serious, feisty and vulnerable all in one. She was a wonderful woman to call your own, but somehow she always seemed to be unavailable to men. Maybe if the time was right, he would tell her how he feels and maybe she will even fall in love with him.
He pulled her closer to him, she only reached his shoulder and he took the liberty of smelling the soft scent on her hair, feeling her soft, full breasts pressing into him. Her arms held him and the soft quiver of her body awoken the protectiveness in him. Gently lifting her chin with his forefinger, he lowered his head, brushing her lips gently with his.
Megan didn’t see the kiss coming. She just needed someone to hold her, sharing in her heartache. She wanted to pull back, but the tenderness in the kiss kept her still against him.
Why couldn’t she love him? He was so easy to love. Her son enjoyed his company, she enjoyed it as well. Deep inside her she tried to will her feelings to come alive, let his kiss set her alight like Jon’s did. She failed. His kiss lacked to awoke the fire and desire inside her. She pushed gently against his chest. Jason stepped back.
“Let go see how Jaden and Blaze are doing.”
They turned to see Jaden’s smile beaming at them. He witnessed the kiss and he was excited to see his mom with Jason. He would love to have him as his dad!
“What are you smiling about?” Megan could taste the guilt in her mouth. Why did it feel like she was betraying Jon? Stop it Megan!
“Oohhh nothing..”
Jason ruffled his hair, and the boy hugged him with his good arm. Hope dug a new home in the boy’s heart and his eyes shone by the thought of his new mission.
