Chapter 88

 “Mom! Guess what?”
He was sitting upright, a nurse helping him at his breakfast. His cheeks were flushed and he looked like the rambunctious Jaden she knew.
“No hello to your favorite mom?”
“Aaarrghh you are my only mom!”
She leaned forward to plant a kiss on his forehead.
“But I’m still the best aren’t I?”
“Yeah, I guess…”
The nurse smiled and stood up when Megan took the plate from her.
“He is all chirpy now, but as soon as the medication works out, he might get a bit cranky.”
“Thank you for warning me and thanks for helping him too.”
She turned back towards the bed.
“Ok now you can tell me the big news.”
“I can go home tomorrow!”
“That’s the best news I’ve heard all week!” the masculine voice from the door caught their attention.
“Jon!”
“Hey buddy. How ya doin? Better?” Jon looked ridiculous with the get well soon balloon and the huge bag in his hand.
“Here I thought I’m bringing a very sick boy something to cheer him up and now…”
“My shoulder still hurts….” He had mastered his dad’s pout to a tee.
Megan smiled and raked through his hair.
“Well I bought it, I’m not gonna take it back, sooo…its all yours.”
Jon fastened the balloon at the end of his bed, handing him the huge brown bag.
“Thanks!”
Jaden’s head disappeared into the bag and that gave Megan enough time to whisper a thank you to Jon.
One after the other the items found their way onto the bed. Cooldrinks, chocolate bars, biscuits a plush pony, crayons, a coloring book and an equestrian magazine.
“I’m not sure if you are left handed or right but I thought it might pass the time.’ He winked at the boy, she saw the accusation in his eyes, or at least she thought she saw it.
“I’m righthanded. So I can color in thank you Jon!”
Jaden eyed a chocolate bar but his mom stepped in, taking it from him and placing it in the drawer.
“Oh no you don’t Jaden Francis Lyons. No chocolate so early in the morning. You haven’t even finished your breakfast yet.” Her mock stance caught Jon’s breath in his throat but to hear that she actually named their son after him almost caused his heart to stop beating.
His hand closed over hers and squeezed gently. Megan felt her stomach turn when she realized what she had said. She turned towards him slowly, too scared to see what was written in those eyes.  Total bewonderment and a flicker of pride shone back at her. Was it tears brimming in those gorgeous pools? The faint smile on her lips tucked at his heartstrings.
“Well mom feed me then! I can’t eat by myself remember!”
She sat down on the bed, Jon made himself comfortable next to them. His knees rubbing against her every time she moved, setting sparks alight in the pit of her stomach.
Jaden was chattering away, feeling like the coolest boy on earth for having Jon Bon Jovi visiting him.
It was almost midday when they eventually slipped out of the room. The thought of seeing White Blaze and not knowing what the poor animal’s destiny was going to be, brought a lump to Megan’s throat.
A warm palm, rested for a few moments on her knee.
“Thank you baby.”
“For?”
“Giving him one of my names, that means the world to me.”
Megan was too choked up to reply and nodded, she was drowning in those eyes and for a moment she thought he might kiss her but he didn’t. The car roared to life. Disappointment weighed her heart down.
“Which way is White Blaze?”
