After the meal the men settled on the porch. Jaden was off with his new toy.
Carol didn’t make the meal too easy on everyone, her dislike for Megan apparent in the way she totally ignored her. Both men kept the conversation light and made sure to include Megan.
When Megan removed the dishes, she was very surprised when Carol offered to help. A small flicker of hope burned. But that flicker was doused the moment they were alone in the kitchen.
“Thank you for helping me Carol.” Her smile froze when she looked up.
“I need to talk to you.” The hard lines around her mouth expressed her feelings very openly.
Megan settled the dishes in the basin, turning to hear her out. Might as well get it over with.
“I see now that Jon is definitely Jaden’s father, there is no doubt. That doesn’t mean I have to like you. I know what you did. I’ve seen many more like you, you just took it a step further. You knew that if you got pregnant you would have your foot in the door. Congratulations you blinded my son enough to take you in. Let me make it clear. I don’t like you and I will keep my eyes on you. If I could help it, I would make sure he sees you for what you are, a conniving, gold digger.“
Anger build inside Megan like a volcano. Who the hell did she think she was?! She didn’t even know her!
Lifting her chin she stared her squarely in the eyes.
“I’m sorry you feel that way. It’s sad that you formed your opinion of me before you even took the time to get to know me. I can assure you I don’t NEED anything from your son. He actually forced me to move in with him. I would have preferred to stay in New York. As for liking me, frankly I don’t give a damn how you feel about me, as long as you don’t treat my son badly. I can live with it. But so help me God if you EVER hurt my boy, you will regret it Carol and that’s no empty threat either. Just as you are a mother, I am too and I will protect what’s mine.”
Two pairs of eyes stared into each other.
The air was thick but they knew where they stood with each other.
“What’s taking you two so long?” Jon sauntered into the kitchen.
The thickness in the air almost choked him. Blues eyes flicked from one woman to the other.
“Everything ok ladies?”
Plastering a false smile Carol made her way towards the door.
“Everything is just fine sweetheart. Megan and I just had a little heart to heart talk. Would you be a darling and make us some coffee?” It was said so sweetly. Megan didn’t miss the contempt in her eyes. Kitchenmaid they seemed to scream at her.
Megan felt her nails digging into her palms.
“Sure, Carol.”
“I’ll meet you outside. Coming Jon?”
“Be with you in a minute ma.”
Megan kept herself busy with the cups. She wished Jon would go outside and leave her alone for a while. She had enough of his mom and the awful words earlier made her sick to her stomach.
Stroking her cheek, he was taken aback when she flinched, jerking her head from his touch.
Frowning he dropped his hand.
“Still pissed about last night, baby?”
“Jon, not now please.”
She was tired and very close to tears.
Banging the cups a bit forcefully, he felt his irritation growing. She was so volatile these days.
“You and my mom had words?”
Inhaling sharply she yanked her head towards him.
“For God’s sake Jon. Drop it won’t you? We all know I’m not her favourite person. I’m tired and I just need some peace and quiet.”
Expecting him to leave she was quite surprised when he dragged her into his arms. Her first reaction was to struggle, but he held her close, stroking her hair. Just standing there, transferring some of his strength into her weary body. Feeling his warmth and comfort seeping into her she embraced him, feeling his back muscles under her palms. She felt his lips in her hair and closed her eyes for a moment. It was heaven just being in his arms.
His lips rested on her forehead for a few seconds.
“Thank you for the wonderful meal, baby. I’m sorry my mother is such a bitch. I don’t know what has gotten into her. I think I need to talk to her.”
“Oh please no Jon. Just let it be. I can fight my own battles I don’t want it on my conscience when you two have a fight over me. She accepted Jaden and that’s all I could ask for. The rest will fall in place.”
She tried hard to believe her own words. Jon could see the battle in her eyes as well. She finished the coffee, any excuse to keep her emotions playing in her eyes.
“Thank you for your understanding. Well you definitely made a fan out of my dad. He thinks you are the best thing since chocolate!” he flashed his drop dead gorgeous smile.
“Well I like him too. He is such a wonderful man. I can see where you got some of your traits.”
Surprise washed over his face.
“Now that’s a nice thing to say.”
“Don’t get a big head now, buster. While you’re here, make yourself helpful.” She couldn’t help but ruffling her fingers through his hair, feeling the buzz in her fingertips.
She handed him the tray, swallowing as he turned his delicious ass her way as he strolled out.
Feeling a bit rejuvenated by his gentle caressing she cleared her throat, ran a hand through her hair and followed him outside.
