Megan was up bright and early the next day. Her nerves were shot but she kept herself busy with the lunch she cooked, thankful that the roast came out perfectly.
As every minute ticked by she dreaded the moment his parents would arrive. John was a wonderful man but his wife was quite something to get use to. She wasn’t so sure that she would win her trust easily.
Jaden skipped in from outside announcing, “ I think they are here!”
Jon hadn’t said much the whole morning, probably nursing a mild hangover as well as a bruised ego. He kept out of her way and she appreciated it.
Blowing out a deep breath, she slipped the apron from her neck, taking her time hanging it up, hoping she could get her emotions under control.
She was the last one to come out the door.
John got out of the car, walking around to open the door for his wife. Jaden stood next to Jon, Jon’s hand resting protectively on the boy’s shoulder.
They didn’t realize what a beautiful picture they made, just standing there.
Curious faces accessed the boy. Astonishment and tears filled both grandparents’ eyes. They couldn’t deny the child’s paternity.
Walking up slowly, their eyes still branded into the boy’s face, John knelt down before the boy.
“Hello big fella. It’s such an honor to meet you.”
“Nice to meet you too.” Jaden smiled at the friendly old man, his grandfather. He liked him.
Tears filled Carol’s eyes as she looked at the young face. It was incredible! It’s like looking at her own Jonny when he was but a boy. The eyes, the smile!
Megan felt her heart thump sympathetically for the couple. There was absolutely no uneasiness in their eyes only pure joy and love ,maybe?
Looking at Jon’s back she noticed it wasn’t so stiff anymore. The hand on Jaden’s shoulder was quivering slightly, the only outward sign on how he felt.
Carol looked up in the blue eyes of her beloved son. She handed the boy a colorful parcel, his eyes sparkled excitedly.
“Thank you ..granma.” The boy had captured Carols’ heart at that moment.
Grandma….he called her grandma!
“Oh it’s my pleasure, Sweetheart.” She ruffled his hair playfully and received another heartaching smile from him.
She stepped towards her son. She hugged him close to her and he let her. She was sniffing now, trying her best not to alarm the boy but yet having difficulty keeping her feelings and shock under control.
Jaden stood by his mother side. Innocence prevented him from understanding the scene before him and over Megan’s dead body would she ever tell him the truth of what is was about.
Looking up to his mom her whispered.
“Why is Grandma crying?”
“Oh honey she is just so glad to have met you.”
“She didn’t need to cry about it!”
He said it a bit louder and everyone heard.
John laughed at the boy’s sass. little Jon alright.
Walking to his side he lowered himself, conspiring with his grandson as he whispered.
“Oh don’t mind her, she is a real cry baby. Cries about everything, I tell you!”
“Really? Wow. That must be hard. So grandma cries for everything?! Eeeew…girls are so strange sometimes!”
That was enough to dry all the tears and send everyone into a fit of laughter.
Turning towards Megan, John smiled gently, kissing her on the cheek.
“Hello my dear.”
“Hello John. “
Mother and son turned towards them. Pride shone in Jon’s eyes. The smile on his face lit his face and Megan gasp inwardly.
But it was when her gaze rested on Carol that she felt her body coiled. The hatred in her eyes was undeniable. Megan wanted to crawl into a hole at that moment. She had never seen such openly dislike from anyone.
“Hello Carol.”
Carol nodded and laced her arm into Jon’s. The adults immediately felt the antagonism but chose to let it go for Jaden’s sake. Carol received a warning stare from her husband.
“So what did Mary cook today? I always love to eat here, she is a wonderful cook.”
“Actually mom Megan cooked for us. If you think Mary is a good cook, wait until you taste her cooking. Richie eats himself into oblivion when that woman cooks.” He winked at her. She needed a bit of back up at the moment. Her vulnerability showed around her mouth and her huge expressive eyes.
Carol didn’t reply but she sure as hell wasn’t impressed by Jon’s reveal.
Feeling sorry for the girl next to him, John held his arm gallantly. She didn’t deserve Carol’s brunt and he would have a serious talk with his wife. This nonsense had to stop. She is the mother of their grandson after all and if he was even remotely in the ballpark she would be something even more to them soon.
“Well, my dear. I’m starving, are you going to feed this old man?”
Resting her hand on his arm, she smiled, knowing full well what he was doing and loving him for it. Jaden skipped into the house, ready for his mom’s homecooking and a peak into the parcel.
Jon’s heart skipped a beat as he watched her walk with his dad into his home, her beautiful smiling face lifted upwards to give his dad full attention. This was the first girl his father ever treated like this, going out of his way to make her feel at ease, even going up against his wife in doing so!
Another sign that she might just be the one after all…
