The flight to New York almost caused Megan her sanity. She cried, she stared, she paced and eventually fell into an exhausted slumber.
Jaden little face swam into her disturbed dreams and she woke up in cold sweat.
On the way to the hospital Megan wanted to knock the damn taxi driver out of his seat and took over. She just told him she needed to get to the hospital urgently, did he even speak English?
She found Aunt Jean in the hallway and her steps faltered. What if he died?
Jean saw the ghostly white girl rushing down the hallway and then slowing down as if she wanted to turn and run. She walked up to meet her and wrapped her in her arms.
“He is going to be ok Meg honey. He had a nasty fall but he will be ok.”
“Thank God!” tears streamed down her face and into her aunt’s shoulder.
“He is asleep. They gave him some strong meds to keep him calm. He broke his shoulder quite badly and he has a concussion. He started vomiting and lost consciousness just after the accident, so they want to keep him a few days to make sure he’ll recover. “
“Didn’t he wear his safety hat?”
“Apparently he did but there must have been something wrong with it. Remember I bought him a new one on that sale? The damn thing broke when he fell.”
“Yes I do. Now tell me how is White Blaze?”
Aunt Jean cleared her throat.
“Not too good honey. He broke his leg and the vet isn’t sure if he will be able to set it or not. If not..”
“They’ll have to put him down…” Megan shivered at that thought. White Blaze is Jaden’s reason for living.
“White Blaze is well tended to for now. He is on painkillers and is resting quietly.”
“I’ll have to go see him tomorrow and speak to the vet. There has to be something we can do.” Mother instinct kicked in, the vet will just HAVE to save Blaze and that all there is to it! She was not going to tell her boy the were about to put his best friend to sleep. No way in hell!
The still form of her son greeted her and she sniffed softly, trying to get her emotions under control.
She kissed him lightly on the forehead but he didn’t move a muscle.
“Hey baby. Mommy’s here.”
She stared at him for ages. He was so like Jon. The strong jawline, the beautiful full lips…”Oh God Jon!”
She stood up to call him, only to see the dark shadow of her cellphone screen. Shit!
I’ll have to give him a call as soon as I get my phone charged.
It was a long, uneventful night. Jaden slept right through, the only sign that he was still alive, was the little grunts he uttered.
~~~
“I’m coming with you.”
“Whatever. Get your fucking ass in gear then.” Jon shrugged as he walked towards his bedroom. Richie was waiting outside his door already by the time he came out.
“Give Meg our love and let us know how the boy is doing,k?”
“Thanx Tic. Will do.”
Dave stopped Jon.
“You ok Jon? I know this must be a real shock to you, but I want you to know something. That boy couldn’t have asked for a better dad.”
Jon didn’t even try to hide the tears as he hugged David closer.
“Thanx man. I needed to hear that. Fuck, I’m a dad!”
“Yes you are old man. Now get your ass to that plane, your boy needs you!” Tic’s eyes were shining too.
In times like these Jon knew he was the luckiest man on earth. How many people were so lucky to have so many loved ones standing behind them all the way?
