He found her fully dressed in the sittingroom, she kept her voice low and by the sound of it she didn’t want any ears to hear her conversation.
She didn’t notice Jon standing in the door.
“Honey, I will see you regularly. I need this job remember? I explained it to you.”
Jon frowned.
Honey? Megan was playing him…she has a damn boyfriend. O well, hell, two can play this game.
“Don’t be angry, ok? I love you very much, always know that!”
Megan giggled.
“No! I love YOU more…No I do! Ok, baby. Talk soon.”
Jon sauntered back to the kitchen.
He wasn’t a saint, but to be played by a woman felt a bit shitty. He had a bug gnawing at his insides for some reason. Jealousy?
Fuck I can have any damn woman I want.
But you want this one and you know it. He silenced the voice in his head.
He switched on the kettle, took the milk from the fridge and slammed it a bit harshly on the counter.
Megan felt her stomach drop when she heard the banging in the kitchen.
He was making coffee and what a sight he was. His back was to her, and every movement caused his back muscles to ripple.
“Coffee is just what I need.” Her voice was light.
“Soooo, everything ok? Usually if someone calls me this late its death, shit or a lover calling.”
Jon could hear in her voice she wasn’t good at lying.
“Oh nothing serious.”
He turned and handed her the cup while his eyes raked over her.
She couldn’t even hide it well enough.
“You’re not good at lying baby.”
Her head whipped up, fire blazing in her eyes.
“What the hell does that mean?”
“Just saying. You’re lying and you’re so fucking bad at hiding it.”
“Jon what I do in my private time has bugger all to do with you.”
She saw the small tick in his jawline.
“I thought tonight changed all that…”
His voice was calm but Megan wasn’t fooled. Panic choked her. Did he hear her conversation? Did she mentioned his name or implicated that he was her child? Oh God! The best way she knew how to diffuse the situation was to stand up and fight.
“Did you listen to my conversation?”
Jon shrugged his shoulders, his eyes belied his calm voice.
“Didn’t know that was a crime…I asked you before and you never answered me. Do you have a man in your life, because honey from where I was standing, it didn’t sound like a friendly conversation.”
Megan felt relief wash over her, as much as she would love to be with Jon, she had to tell him about her son first before they can start a relationship, if it was even remotely possible. She needed to know that he wanted Jaden and she had to tell him soon, but her guts deserted her at that moment.
“I think it’s time I go. I really don’t appreciate you listening in to my phone calls, that was low and as for having a boyfriend. Do you really think I never met other men while I was gone?”
Her words almost ripped his guts out. She was on edge about something, maybe she was that type of woman. Playing two men at once, but why didn’t that sound true to him? Did Megan change that much over the years? What happened to her?
“To be honest I never really thought about it, but seeing as running is the only thing you’re good at, why don’t you run Megan. Don’t let the door slap your ass on the way out.”
Megan’s gasp sliced through the air.
“Fuck you Jon.”
“Yeah you did and it was quite a nice ride while it lasted huh? Tell me baby, watcha gonna do on the tour? Fly him in or use me as a spare?”
He knew it was coming before the slap hit home.
