Jon offered to get her some coffee and she sighed, relieved that she would have a few minutes to pull herself together.
Mary saw the instant attraction flared up between the couple. She was afraid this would happen. She loved both the kids. She didn’t want either of them to get hurt again.
Megan walked slowly to her father’s bed. She sat down , took his wrinkled hand in her own.
“Daddy. Its Megan.”
She took his work roughened hand and planted a soft kiss on it.
She stared at the still form intently, hoping to see a flickering of life.
Jon handed her the coffee, a tingle running up his arm as their hands met unexpectedly.
He noticed the perfectly manicured red nails. It was obvious that she worked in an office environment. Her hands were too perfect for someone working with their hands a lot. Wonder what she did? He also noticed no ring. Hhhmmmmm.
“Thanks Jon.”
“Sure, baby.”
Baby. Why did it sound so comforting and insanely sexy? He was a player and knew how to play the women in his life, but this was not the time or place for his little games. She met his gaze, ready to tell him just that when the message in his eyes stopped her.
The longing and gentleness in his eyes were heartbreaking. He blinked and it was gone. Did she imagine it or longed to see it in his eyes again?
He turned and sat down.
Megan laid her head next to her dad, being so close to him brought her some comfort and made her feel like the young kid she used to be. She drifted off to sleep after a while, holding his hand in hers.
Jon watched the emotions play on her face. She was in another world and by the looks of it the demons were taking their toll on her. She fell into a light slumber, her face relaxed in sleep, to him she looked like an angel, a lost, heartbroken angel.
The puffiness and smudges made her look even more vulnerable . He felt the need to scoop her into his arms, crushing her to him and promise her that he would make everything alright. And he would have but money can’t buy health and he was the last one to lie to her. Guess he should do something he hadn’t done in quite a while…pray.
Why did all these emotions came bubbling to the surface again? He tried to convince himself that they had a fling, and almost believed it. But now he wasn’t so sure anymore. Why didn’t he look her up? Was he really that shallow?
Mary’s stood up and walked over to her.
“Pumpkin, I’m going home now. I think you should come with me. We’ll come and visit him tomorrow again.”
“You go ahead mom. I want to stay a little while.”
“Sure?”
She nodded.
Mary turned towards Jon.
“I think I’ll stay with her. She doesn’t know how to get to my place and its dark out.”
